I've now had some success, and want to report that here.

Some notes:
- I'm using GNOKII Version 0.6.4-CVS-20040709
- I'm using FreeBSD 4.10-RELEASE, with the author's patch, and (on
a lark) the beta-ish USB 2.0 driver; from my config file:
device ehci
- This device probed as above, and uses the ucom device.
- The phone not only reports 'data accessory attached', but also
says 'charging'.
I only minially edited the gnokiirc.sample file:
port = /dev/ucom0
model = AT
And now --identify works:
% gnokii --identify
GNOKII Version 0.6.4-CVS-20040709
IMEI : 010282000587057
Manufacturer : Nokia
Model : Nokia 6800
Revision : V 5.58
And I've been able to at least pull phone numbers with
gnokii --getphonebook ME 1 end
So, at least now I've set the stage for getting some info on/off
of my phone.
