hello all,

here's my report after 10h of testing. i couldn't
solve the problem at all!

i've just bought a usb irda dongle (Sigmatel 4200),
i'm using paul stewart's stir4200.o on debian's
testing 2.4.26-1-686 #1 kernel.

i've managed to get 2 phones to try gnokii with:
.nokia 6100:
V 04.70
23-04-03
NPL-2

.and nokia 6310:
V 04.20
04-03-02
NPE-4

i got irda working right: modprobe stir4200, irattach
irda0 -s, and then irdadump. the latter showing both
phones:
04:21:46.272111 xid:rsp d89b3d20 < c3070000 S=6 s=0
Nokia 6310 hint=b125 [ PnP Modem Fax Telephony IrCOMM
IrOBEX ] (27)
...

and cat /proc/net/irda/discovery showing:
IrLMP: Discovery log:
nickname: Nokia 6100, hint: 0xb125, saddr: 0xd89b3d20,
daddr: 0x0000ea3f

irdaping 0x0000ea3f shows:
IrDA ping (0x0000ea3f on irda0): 32 bytes
32 bytes from 0x0000ea3f: irda_seq=3 time=110.32 ms.
32 bytes from 0x0000ea3f: irda_seq=7 time=112.41 ms.
32 bytes from 0x0000ea3f: irda_seq=9 time=103.41 ms.
32 bytes from 0x0000ea3f: irda_seq=13 time=103.43 ms.
32 bytes from 0x0000ea3f: irda_seq=14 time=103.43 ms.
<C-c>
22 packets received by filter

ifconfig irda0 shows:
irda0 Link encap:IrLAP HWaddr d8:9b:3d:20
          UP RUNNING NOARP MTU:2048 Metric:1
          RX packets:574 errors:818 dropped:0
overruns:0 frame:818
          TX packets:13316 errors:0 dropped:0
overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:8
          RX bytes:9122 (8.9 KiB) TX bytes:193056
(188.5 KiB)

rx errors are high, though the dongle and the phone
are perfectly aligned.

i started testing gnokii with --monitor and then
--identify, but no configuration ever worked!

i read all the gnokii doc except protocol/, and _all_
the posts relating either irda, infra, 6310 and 6100.
the only thing
listed there that i haven't done is that in
news://news.gmane.org:119/address@hidden . i
presumed that the changes
in question have been committed to cvs last year. am i
wrong?

now for the gnokii/irdadump logs: their filenames
correspond to <model>_<connection>.log for gnokii logs
and
<model>_<connection>.irdadump for... irdadump! this
specifies the gnokiirc settings.

considering my 6100, you can notice that i get the
"Couldn't open PHONET device: No route to host" msg,
thought i manage to get
connected if i rerun gnokii --monitor, right after,
hence the _2.log suffix (applies to 6310*_2.log as
well).

i can get another couple of phone/connection bought.
my boss just want to see it work! may i have your
advice for this?
we want to build up a SMS gateway.

here's another question: for testing purposes, what is
the minimum function i can tell gnokii to perform, in
order to know if it
works. so far, i've tried --monitor and --identify.

thanks in advance,
mlistus
