I'm not sure, since I don't have a infra red port on any of my Macs.

But all serial devices under OSX (if irda is just a serial port) show up 
in /dev/cu.*

I'm using a bluetooth connection to my phone and under OSX I use it like
a serial port.  (/dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem)
