Thanks to you both.  A swapfile of 1024 (Mb?) changes things;  I have also ensured there is 6Gb of storage.  I still get errors but they look more like functional problems.

With 5.2.0 and 5.4.0 I get:
checking size of void *... 4
checking size of short... 2
checking size of int... 4
checking size of long... 4
checking for long long... yes
checking size of long long... 8
checking for int8_t... yes
checking for int16_t... yes
checking for int32_t... yes
checking for int64_t... yes
checking for long long int... yes
checking for intmax_t... yes
checking for intptr_t... yes
checking for uint8_t... yes
checking for uint16_t... yes
checking for uint32_t... yes
checking for uint64_t... yes
checking for unsigned long long int... yes
checking for uintmax_t... yes
checking for uintptr_t... yes
checking for int64_t underlying type... long long
configure: error: error verifying int64_t uses long long
Makefile:4099: recipe for target 'configure-gcc' failed
make[1]: *** [configure-gcc] Error 1
This is after about 700 lines in the log file.

With 4.7.4 I get:
/home/jd/GM2/build-4.7.4/./gcc/xgcc -B/home/jd/GM2/build-4.7.4/./gcc/ -B/home/jd/opt/armv6l-unknown-linux-gnueabihf/bin/ -B/home/jd/opt/armv6l-unknown-linux-gnueabihf/lib/ -isystem /home/jd/opt/armv6l-unknown-linux-gnueabihf/include -isystem /home/jd/opt/armv6l-unknown-linux-gnueabihf/sys-include    -O2 -g -O2  -O2 -g -DIN_GCC   -W -Wall -Wwrite-strings -Wcast-qual -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wold-style-definition  -isystem ./include   -fPIC -fno-inline -g -DIN_LIBGCC2 -fbuilding-libgcc -fno-stack-protector   -fPIC -fno-inline -I. -I. -I../.././gcc -I../../../gcc-4.7.4+gm2-git-latest/gm2/gcc-versionno/libgcc -I../../../gcc-4.7.4+gm2-git-latest/gm2/gcc-versionno/libgcc/. -I../../../gcc-4.7.4+gm2-git-latest/gm2/gcc-versionno/libgcc/../gcc -I../../../gcc-4.7.4+gm2-git-latest/gm2/gcc-versionno/libgcc/../include  -DHAVE_CC_TLS  -o _muldi3.o -MT _muldi3.o -MD -MP -MF _muldi3.dep -DL_muldi3 -c ../../../gcc-4.7.4+gm2-git-latest/gm2/gcc-versionno/libgcc/libgcc2.c -fvisibility=hidden -DHIDE_EXPORTS

Are you able to help me with this?

Is the kill of a process expected?
The deb package of 1.5.4 on x86_64 is OK but, of course, I need to
generate ARM code.

Yours hopefully,

Hi John,

I echo Ernst's recommendation to increase the swapfile (swapspace). The
kill is unexpected - likely occurred due to no memory left,

regards,
Gaius
