Heb mij eens op Linux gestort maar het loopt niet echt zoals ik verwacht
had. Ik heb mijn problemen eens gebundeld in een message gepost op een
paar forums. Ik wacht nu op antwoord...Misschien kunnen jullie helpen? Ik
snap de ballen van hoe ik wat waar moet configureren, herconfigureren of
installeren.
Ik heb ook eens een lijstje gemaakt (zie attachment) wat de desktops en
server zou moeten in onze scholen. Kan je dit eens bekijken en commentaar
geven aub. Ik heb de eerste testen met open office achter de rug
(welliswaar onder windows) en die zien er zeer belovend uit ivm de
compatibiliteit die wij nodig hebben.

First Linux attempt: Mandrake 9.0 hangs at "hard drive
detection" , Debian got SIS drv problem...

Last WE I bought a new mbord for my
first Linux pc. It's an all in one K7SOM+ with 1400+ Duron, 160Mb, Maxtor
4D040H2. Onboard Video SIS650, Lan SIS 900, Sound C-Media AC97.
I'm a complete newbie in Linux but have good knowledge of Microsucks (NT,
W2K Server...).
My problems:
Mandrake freezes at 'Hard drive detection' CTRL ALT F2 gives DrakeX
v1.759, ALT F1 Entering step ‘Hard drive detection’, ALT F3 Starting step
‘setupSCSI’, ALT F4 ..<4>had: Maxtor 4D040H2,ATA DISK
drive..<6>ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq=4) is a 1655 OA
Only thing I can do here is power down the comp.
I tried another (WD caviar 22500) disk, and cable (ata, non-ata), same
result.
I gave up 
Then installed Debian 3.0. No problem until I wanted to install Xfree and
GNOME. I chose the SIS driver but the SIS 650 seem not to be supported.
Dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and then VGA, no luck either with the
standard VGA. Fatal server error: AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver
0. Then found
http://www.winischhofer.net/
copied "sis_drv.o" over the existing one but then.. Copy
Imakefile as well as all .c and .h files from that temporary directory
over the existing ones inside the X source tree
programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/sis/
I can’t find that tree on my system. Stuck again..
Anybody familiar with my problems? And want to help me to get rid of
Microsoft ;-)
