[Gdb] gdb and simulator

Hi All,
 I am new to this mailing list. I want to develop
 a simulator for a machine to which gcc (gdb)   is
already ported. I want a small help from you.

  This is a first time I am experimenting with this
work. So, how long will take for me to develop a
simulator with gcc chain........

  I have an assumption like, gdb supports, the
development for a simulator with some standarad part.
Am I right ?


   1) Can I use this simulator as standalone. 
    (Like with out running gdb ? )
   2) What are the pros of gdb+sim comapred to an
independent (general ) simulator ?
   3) What are the reference documents for this
development scope.
