From the evidence (several different global mimetype directories, each with 
distinct syntax, and even in the very same user folder, a good bunch of 
different naming schemes, plus the mentioned unused relicts) it appears that 
they changed it over and over, and - in spite of freedesktop recommended specs 
- there's yet no common line in all linux apps and it's for sure not something 
you could fix in any case.

I think the best you could do ATM is to follow Gnome, or get rid of it all by 
using a internal map file.
