ok, tracked.

Piotr Eljasiak <address@hidden>:

| Do you have working help files from other apps - for example gedit? Is
| it possible to launch it pressing F1?

Nope. Even not when i start a complete gnome-session (from
commandline) .... oops, it seems the gnome-panel needs to contact
gdm now, for whatever reason, it produced an error message and a
desktop guru .... ok, lets start gdm .... oops, i deinstalled gdm meanwhile ?
ok, lets install gdm ... oops, the debian package barfs about an irreparable
error returned by 'adduser' (trying to create a system user and group) ?

sigh. Ok, lets see.

(several hours later)

I struggled really hard to create user and group myself on commandline,
but package 'passwd' was updated, and 'adduser' seems to have changed
or maybe it's just broken. Or the manpage doesn't reflect reality anymore.
(How can they dare do such a thing !)

And i don't know exactly how to update the respective PAM modules and what the
heck else my be necessary. It's no more like in the old days...
The gnome system tool couldn't create users anymore, too.
In the end, it worked with the new webmin version -- they know the newest
secrets ;) .... And now the package runs through.

OK....: But help doesn't work in the full gnome-session either.
However, it turned out help works in my guest account now !

So i deleted all my users' gnome files and created a new session.
And voila, help works there now, too.

A pity i configured so many session settings which are all lost now.
Things like that happened before, and they are the main reason
why i don't use any KDE or GNOME sessions anymore. I'm really fed up,
and i swear i will never again configure my gnome session beyond
installing a 'log out' button (- yes, it's missing by default too).

***Advertise:***
My wmaker session works perfectly since 5 years...not a single
crash or fault, even through some major internal changes.
I tell you it is by design, and it always starts from the most
basic decision....

However again, gnome-commander help still doesn't work.

oops...lately it comes to my mind it's probably my fault !
I don't do 'make install' anymore .... ! Already told you the story:
User can't write to locations like /usr/local/lib and i don't like
to su root for that (e.g., can user delete the old cvs version for
downloading a new one then ?). And there's no way i'd change the
install pathes after each new CVS download.
So what ? Any suggestions are welcome !
Meanwhile I just start the wrapper script in src directly.

For the records:

Makefile:prefix = /usr/local
configure:datarootdir='${prefix}/share'

That's why there's no gnome-commander in /usr/share/gnome/help,
i think.

But there's /usr/loca/share/gnome/gnome-commander. It's the very only
folder there, all gnome stuff is under /usr/share/gnome/help.
I think it's a relict from a previous install, and there's nearly nothing in.

( Average 70-100 MB every 24 h day .... if you want to work
productive it can be the hell... )

| Do you mean renaming with SHIFT+F6 ?

Yes :) thx.

Just forgot. I'm _so_ used to CTRL+R...i *can't tell* you *how much*
i'm used to it ! (selfirony -> i'm getting rapidly tired)
Ctrl-r seems to set the cursor on top of the file list, however....
Well, i wonder if renaming would be associated with moving
by a user who is not familiar with shell nor filesystem internals.
Instead, it could easily / intuitively be recognized as something
really not related...try to imagine.

So, in this case, there would be no need to make it
'Shift+F6', and hah! i would beg you obsequiously and antsy,
to consider CTRL+R... but, as things are, i won't.
(yes i looked the words up)
