I agree, configure scripts are a pain but for the end user it's a lot
cleaner that having compilation fail because of missing librairies.

If some tests can be done directly in the makefile, I'm all for it but
the current state is not optimal in my opinion.

If nested functions are answer, you've got the wrong question. Al Viro
