There is a misunderstanding. When registering a new user on
savannah, it checks if the corresponding e-mail <user>@gnu.org exists.
If yes it refuses to create the account even if it's available on
Savannah at the moment. The rationale is that someone (<user>@gnu.org)
would then be unable to get the <user> login on Savannah and that would
lead to unecessary inconsistencies in login names within the GNU project.
Explaining all this on the Savannah pages may help.

There is no specific reason/need to have a @gnu.org e-mail. I
mean it looks nice and may be useful to show that you're indeed
involved in the GNU project. Other that this it has no technical
implication.
