[ft] GSUB opentype

Hi,
I am testing the STIX fonts (free scientific fonts: www.stixfonts.org)
on linux/freetype(2.3) and cannot get the ligatures working in a
type1-based OT font. 
Although I searched through the documentation and mailing archives, I
could not get a clear picture about the GSUB support.
Does freetype support GSUB tables? 
Are there additional libs or modules needed?
Are there apps that do implement GSUB support?
