Such things are not directly controlled by FreeType.

I suggest that you get the CVS of FreeType 2 and the latest versions
of autoconf, automake, and libtool.  After installing these three
packages you should run the `autogen.sh' script to create FreeType's
configure script, then proceed as usual.

If the error still persists it's probably necessary to scan the
mailing list archive of the `bug-autoconf' mailing list (on
lists.gnu.org) whether this AIX problem has already been reported to
the autoconf people.  Maybe there is a new beta release available too
(from alpha.gnu.org/gnu/autoconf).  Otherwise you should send a bug
report.
