[Freetype] status of kerning in freetype 2.1.9?

Hi

I noticed that the kerning for several TTF fonts seems to be not what
I'd expect, one especially noticable is Microsoft's Verdana font (see
png attached).

I hesitate to say this is a FreeType problem but nothing I do elsewhere
(I'm using GD) makes any difference to the output wrt kerning.

Any hints appreciated.
