I see now that the no-strict-aliasing isn't in effect when I do the compile with gmake. Unfortunately I am completely unfamiliar with the layout of files that freetype uses. Could someone give me a quick pointer as to where I would set the compiler options to turn on the no-strict-aliasing flag?
Thanks

Add -fno-strict-aliasing to your compiler options.

Your zlib is still not configured correctly. Again, the compiler
doesn't find `zconf.h' (also in /usr/local/include, I think) with a
valid definition of `ZEXTERN'.
