You don't need freetype 2.0.1 to use truetype fonts in X.
There exist two different backends (both based on freetype 1.3) in
XFree that allows you to display truetype fonts: X-Freetype (formerly
xfsft) and xfstt.
Please refer to the documentation shipped with XFree86 (for instance
the excellent ``XFree86 Fonts HowTo''), or to XFree86 mailing lists.
