What exactly do you mean with 'compiler arguments'?

Can't remember, sorry.  I'm rather sure that the autoconf people would
do something similar to your original approach (i.e., using
preprocessor stuff only) if it worked for all situations.

BTW, how well does meson support cross compilation?
