Yes. In X.Y.Z we update Z for minor improvements or bug fixes. Y
gets increased for important improvements, and increasing X
essentially means a complete, incompatible rewrite of the library.
Regarding the `origin/STABLE' branch: This is deprecated, as are all
other branches, and of historical interest only. Right now, we use
`origin/master' exclusively.
