For well-instructed glyf fonts the legacy filter gives the best results. For type1 or cff fonts, or when rendering glyf fonts either with the autofit module or w/o any fitting freetype's default filter, IMO, gives the best results. I use these four fontconfig files to acomplish that:
10-autohint-cff.conf
Description: Text Data
10-autohint-type1.conf
Description: Text Data
10-hintstyle-by-fontformat.conf
Description: Text Data
99-filter-by-hints.conf
Description: Text Data
Not every app will honour the filter choice; most distributions' versions of cairo will, some versions of xft may. I *think* current versions of qt do, but I'm not certain of that. -JimC -- James Cloos <address@hidden> OpenPGP: 1024D/ED7DAEA6
