I've used ftview to sample fonts now for several years.  Autohinting has
always changed the metrics.

The 'light autohinting' mode only does vertical hinting and keeps the
same horizontal metrics as the unhinted outlines.

I beleive David recommends light autohinting with his lcd filter as the
optimal choice.
