It shouldn't cause such problems since I regularly test whether
FreeType compiles fine with a C++ compiler (g++, to be more precise).
If it doesn't compile, it is a bug.

Regarding your other remarks I can't comment further since I don't
know the details (and honestly, I don't want to know them :-).
