It fails with the Verdana Bold from Win ME also.

Thanks for the report -- this is a bug.

David, can you look into it (see attached image)?  This font should be
rendered fine down to a resolution of 9ppem, but both 9 and 10ppem
show such problems (at 9ppem it is the Ångstrom glyph).
