I've solved the problem by rebuilding libfreetype-2.1.9 after commenting 
out the line:

#undef TT_CONFIG_OPTION_COMPONENT_OFFSET_SCALED

(freetype-2.1.9/include/freetype/config/option.h, line 483)

like this:

/* #undef TT_CONFIG_OPTION_COMPONENT_OFFSET_SCALED */
