Hello again,

just tested in 2.1.7 and there it works ok. So thats why it worked for Keith 
Packard ('gwaterfall' running freetype 2.1.7-2.1 (debian unstable))
So this problem/change was introduced between 2.1.7 and 2.1.8 (4 months). 
Unfortunately I don't understand hinting enought to track problem myself (I 
know lame excuse for not having time :-).

Ok, problem reproduced using:
ftstring -m ABCDER -r 96 10 arial.ttf
then switch off aa using "a" key. Patented hinting must be enabled. It does in 
both 2.1.8 and current snapshots.

for example: R looks like:
