Note that David demonstrated the benefits of keeping track of the 
neighboring glyph positions here:

What's the recommended technique?
Is there a chance that freetype will reconsider and start providing the 
interface for the string rendering which will incorporate intelligent 
kerning of the adjacent glyphs? The string rendering seems natural place 
for solving the spacing problem. Freetype without string rendering 
shouldn't probably even bother.
