With a checkout from this morning 9:30am CDT, all is fine with OOo.  
I've got a patch for some version numbering again in aclocal.m4, can 
you apply and run autoconf to regenerate configure?  Patch adds a '.' 
between the library name (libfreetype) and the version string to 
conform to current installs on Mac OS X/Darwin (from XFree86 and 
Apple's X11 installs).  Also explicitly specifies compilation with PIC.
