Ok, I did it, by adding the following to /etc/fonts/local.conf:

  <match target="font">
   <edit name="autohint" mode="assign_replace"><bool>true</bool></edit>
  </match>


But this is sick---at least, this is the first impression you get! I
mean, what was wrong with

<autohint>true</autohint>

? :-)
