Summary: Compile W/O root access?

Initial Comment:
I am on a shared server (FreeBSD) and want to 
compile FreeType 2 for use with GD in PHP. When 
I do a ./configure ----prefix=/usr/home/
MYUSERNAME i get an error:

I assume it is because I do not have root privs for 
chown. Is there a work around or something I need 
to change in the ./config?

I have spoken to my hosting company and they will 
not compile it for me (which I understand). Any 
help or suggestions?
