Interesting question. Maybe Just van Rossum can speak on this. I suppose
that if one were to write a MacBinary, binhex, or raw resource decoder, one
could get the mac font files over to a non-Mac platform and use that decoder
to get things loaded into the necessary FT structures.
For details of what I am talking about, look at the t1unmac and
t1mac tools from the t1utils suite of tools:

In fact, one culd use the t1unmac to get a Macintosh LWFN into PFA format,
and then use the FT as usual. Of course, one wouldn't get the kerning that
is stored in the Mac Screen Suitcase.
