If you are interested in bitmap fonts, you should consider using the
pcf format (also supported by freetype2): a lot of good bdf fonts (in
many common sizes) are available from
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs-fonts.html
and compiling them to pcf font format is easy with bdftopcf.
