Hello,
working on integrating the FreeType scan-line converters into the
Ghostscript graphics library, I met quite similar problems.
Screenshots show disappearing vertical stem in the Courier-Roman font
(http://www.ens.fr/~zappa/screen2.html). OTOH, the monochrome
scan-line converter works fine (.../screenshots.html).
The FreeType monochrome scan-line converter, together with the
oversampling and filtering down provided by Ghostscript /devalpha/
also works fine and is currently my favorite solution to generate
antialiased glyphs on Ghostscript (forthcoming in gsft-0.0.3).
Notice that in my case the fonts were interpreted and hinted by
Ghostscript and not by FreeType.
Regards,
-francesco
