Well, I believe that you can use at least two methods:

  - use a centered pen for "outline" or "hollow" glyphs
  - use an "outer" pen for "bordered" glyphs..

and of course, you've got the sick "emboldening" thing that also
uses an "outer" pen..

frankly, all methods are pretty obvious to implement as long as
you know how to draw one side of a stroke.
