Basically because that is too much work (translation *and* maintaining).

Then, the easiest is to study cross-language compilation on your platform.
On Windows and the like, the usual way to do this is to use DLLs.
What for a compiler do you plan to use?

(BTW, for the moment Freetype 2 does not aim 16-bit compilers I believe,
so if you are using 16-bit tools... )
