Oops, I missed that line in the original post. Werner is right, TTC is
currently not supported by TTX/FontTools. However if someone can supply me
with a sample font(*), I'd be happy to at least investigate how much is
involved in adding TTC support.

*) Preferably a small one (modem! modem!), although I admit that is a
contradiction in terms... Of course, a URL to a public domain font is fine,
too, as long as it isn't a Windows .EXE archive.
