Strange curve point values on outline

Hi,
   I am walking the outline of a single letter 'A'.
The porblem is that when I inquire as to the value of
x and y from the outline.points->x/y I get only values
of 2454 for x and 1024 for y.
the outline is obtained from get_glyph_outline_function.
the following is an over view of what I do:
init engine
init kerning extensions
open face
get face proerties
get num of glyphs
get new glyph
get new instance
set instance resolutions
set instacne point size
convert the string/letter to unicode (same func as ftstring.c)
load glyph with TTLOAD_DEFAULT
get glyph outline
then walk the outline.

Any Ideas
