I don't know, if i understand your question right, but i use fluidsynth
like this:

/usr/bin/fluidsynth -a alsa -A cmipci -m alsa_seq 
/mnt/reallybig/floh/soundfonts/FluidR3GM2.SF2

cmipci is an alias for "hw:0,0"
