How did you set the variable? Did you do it in the shell? And if so, did
you "export" it?
In bash or sh, you should use:
ESPRESSO_SCRIPTS=/whereever
export ESPRESSO_SCRIPTS
in tcsh or csh, it should be:
setenv ESPRESSO_SCRIPTS /wherever
