What version of Emacs are you using?  I am able to use the S-tab key
combination to do `muse-previous-reference' in Emacs21, XEmacs21, and
Emacs from CVS using GNU/Linux.  There is no explicit mapping of
"S-tab" in `muse-mode-map', but the alternatives [(shift tab)],
[(shift iso-lefttab)] and [(shift control ?i)] seem to refer to the
same key as S-tab does.
