  How will this work with:

    ... in the named directories ~dir1 and ~dir2 (see the
    [[Zsh]] page) ...

?  I think this is too simple markup.  Maybe the following is
more likely to not conflict with normal text (and with existing
text, more importantly):

    ~~this is marked up as strike-through~~
