I (and a lot of other people) get around the gnus blocking issue by using
external programs to fetch mail and news in the background. Then gnus only has
to talk to localhost to get messages, which means that your emacs session is
probably only blocked for a few seconds.

I use leafnode for news and fetchmail for mail.

I sometimes use a separate frame for gnus, so that my current working window
configuration doesn't have to be disrupted when I want to check messages. There
are other ways of dealing with that problem too.
