Great tips, thanks Zak!

On my list of things to try now are:

- For buffer management: iswitchb (and ido and Ibuffer as others
  have mentioned)

- For gnus: easily open it in other frame with:

  (global-set-key "\C-xm" 'gnus-other-frame)

- Down the road, perhaps try an alternative Window Manager, like ION
  or RatPoison.

And thanks for the pointer to http://musicpd.org, looks interesting. 
Good luck with your project to interface it with emacs.
