In the process of merging this, I also reorganized the file, fixed the
docstrings, and removed the cl dependency. The resulting patch is
fairly large. Please double-check to make sure I didn't break
anything. It seems to work over here. =)

In retrospect, I should've probably made them separate patches,
but... <laugh>
