Hmm,

It appears the problem might be in muse-colors.el.  When I run make 
in the muse/ directory (created by un-tar'ing the source 
obtained from John W's site) I get (after a bit):

 Compiling /user/pll/lisp/muse/muse-colors.el...
 While compiling toplevel forms in file /user/pll/lisp/muse/muse-colors.el:
   !! Wrong number of arguments ((require 3))
 >>Error occurred processing muse-colors.el: 
 Wrong number of arguments: require, 3 


  Done
  make: *** [muse-colors.elc] Error 1

Don't know if that helps any.
