.emacs.desktop wacked on restart

I installed the latest Mac/Carbon version of GNU Emacs.  After
several edits to my .emacs file, I finally got Emacs to start
cleanly.  These edits were simply to comment loading Mac-specific
.elc files that I had needed to load to quiet errors with the
previous Carbon port.

Anyway, now that Emacs is loading without init errors, I discover
that my .emacs.desktop file has basically been gutted.  Only the
local files (with the .emacs added) that I had open when I did
the last manual desktop-save (before the upgrade) are there.
What about the nearly 50 remote files I had open?

If this is by design, then where is the backup of my .emacs.desktop?!
Surely there's a backup, right?
