I've checked in new monochrome icons for those that came from the GTK 2 icons.I think they look better now, but I may be biased :-). If someone else can see if they are good enough, that would be great.
Note, GTK does not handle highlightning and making icons inactive very well on a monochrome display. I suspect a bug in GTK somewhere because the Motif/Lesstif/Lucid/no toolkit X builds handle this OK.
