Ha! - indeed.  It's obviously not allowed to add spaces like I used to
do:

  <2018-05-05 Sat> -- <2018-05-07 Mon>

With

  <2018-05-05 Sat>--<2018-05-07 Mon>

it works like I want.

So, thank you very much to pointing me into the right direction.

But this doesn't seem to be documented...(question to all)?
