    IMO, it is simply not true that "column number is slower" -- I have never
    seen any noticable slowdown as an effect of having column number mode
    turned on (I have that all the time).

    IMO, it should be on always.

I don't want to consider the question now.  Let's fix the bugs and
start pretesting.
