Yes, this is with just

./configure --enable-checking

on both Debian/bullseye and Debian/bookworm.

Since this is just me, I'm starting wonder whether I have some sort of
build artefact in my tree that even "make extraclean" isn't getting rid
of.  I'll try a totally fresh tree.
