I'd suggest you try it, it's a very nice feature of Emacs.  C-x C-m C-\, 
select TeX (for example), and type \alpha, \beta, \gamma.

It's not strictly speaking a help command about character codings indeed, 
but it's about how Emacs handles characters, so it's much closer to 
character codings than to the help commands in the "other help commands" 
section.
