The same way we know that various proprietary operating systems and
programs spy on their users: from people who investigate these issues
and publish their findings.

I think you are very unusual in this regard.  I have a lot to do on my
typical day, so every second of my time counts.  I will use the most
efficient means of getting the information I need as fast as possible.
Today's Internet search engines make that possible, so I use them a
lot.
