Why doesn't clicking the space or X in an org-mode checkbox result in toggling the checkbox state?

It makes sense that one might want to click "TODO" or "DONE" without toggling state: you might want to change the text.

But why does clicking the checkbox (- [ ]) not toggle the X? There isn't a valid state for the checkbox other than the X.

Maybe clicking the brackets should toggle too.

I suppose sometimes you may click with the intention to change the indentation, but they can click elsewhere for that.

This seems unnecessarily insufferable.
